Sand and debris are tiny particles, but they are made up of grains that are incredibly sharp. When you are walking over your rug, you are placing your body weight onto these fine particles that act to dig in and damage the rug fibres.

Rugs should be able to last a lifetime if they are appropriately cared for. Rugs have the capability of hiding dirt well as it works down into the fibres. While we may not see the extent of the dirt within our rug, it does not mean it isn’t there. If you wait until the point at which you can see your rug is dirty, then it will be saturated with fine particles and dirt.
