While head grease will build up over time, it is important to keep on top of it. It is unsightly and unfortunately can smell.  If you are faced with head grease on your upholstery sofa, it is important not to panic. The trick is not to panic and to avoid doing anything that could make it worse. You can make grease stains worse by rubbing them. This can often spread the stain further into the fibres.

The reason why oil and grease stains have such a bad reputation is because the challenge to remove them. So many solutions cannot cut through the stain and end up making it worse. Effectively they spread the grease further. Either that or the cleaning solution removes the stain and then leaves residue behind.

Many upholstery cleaning tips take you through the process of removing the grease from your upholstery. It is clear that this is a multi-step process.

Most state that you should start with a product that will blot up the grease such as corn starch or talcum powder. Some then advise that you use a soap product that will further cut through the grease.

A scrubbing brush should then be used followed by a damp cloth. Concern comes when wetting upholstery, especially suede or other similar fabrics. These even just dampened can be left with a huge water mark that is often as unsightly as the grease stain.
